Now it’s time to meet the characters and see how they would play the parts in JK Rowling’s Wizarding World, especially in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (upcoming) movie series. I try to keep it short so I can focus only on their important role to fit the story.
Gellert Grindelwald was considered one of the most dangerous Dark Wizards of all time, just fell second after Lord Voldemort. He was a student at Durmstrang Institute, which is infamous for its keen in Dark Arts, before he’s expelled for conducting dark, dangerous experiments.
He later stayed with his aunt, where he met young Albus Dumbledore and formed a close relationship with him. Both makes plan to find Deathly Hallows and led a Wizarding revolution to end the International Statute of Secrecy.
However, their relationship fell apart after they’re involved in a three way duel with Aberforth, Albus’ brother, that resulted in Ariana Dumbledore’s death.
After that, Grindelwald formed his own army in early twentieth century. He still set out on his original plan which includes terrorising Europe in the hope to make Muggles / No Maj notice them and created a war so he could take over Muggles. His army’s motto is “For A Greater Good”.
Meanwhile, he’s also in pursuit of Deathly Hallows and soon successfully stole the Elder Wand from the wandmaker, Gregorovitch. He established a power base in continental Europe at the fortress Nurmengard.
In 1945, at the height of his power, Dumbledore confronted and defeated him in a legendary duel. He was then imprisoned in his own fortress in Nurmengard for around 53 years.
In 1998, Voldemort killed him when he refused to give up the information about Elder Wand’s whereabouts (so Voldemort wouldn’t destroy Dumbledore’s tomb on his search).
Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, O.M. (First Class), Grand Sorc., D. Wiz., X.J.(sorc.), S. of Mag.Q. was the Transfiguration Professor, and later Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was a half-blood, Muggle-supporting wizard, the son of Percival and Kendra Dumbledore, and the elder brother of Aberforth and Ariana.
In his youth, he met Grindelwald and formed a close bond as both shared a similar vision in ruling over Muggles. JK Rowling confirmed that Dumbledore once harboured a romantic feeling to Grindelwald and said that it was his “great tragedy”.
Dumbledore then confronted Grindelwald in 1945 in the legendary duel and came out as a winner, taking possession of the Elder Wand. This duel thus ensured his position even more as the most powerful wizard of his time.
Due to the fact that he had a keen mind and legendary power, Dumbledore became the only wizard that Voldemort ever feared. He was the wielder and the master of the Elder Wand from 1945 until 1997 and considered by many as the greatest Headmaster to ever grace Hogwarts. As he was about to die by a cursed ring, he planned his own death with Severus Snape. He was killed by Snape during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower.
Though he was no longer alive at the time, it was through Dumbledore’s manipulations that Voldemort was ultimately defeated and peace restored to the wizarding world. He is the only Headmaster that was laid to rest at Hogwarts. Albus Dumbledore’s portrait still remains at Hogwarts. Harry Potter later named his second son Albus Severus Potter after him.
Ariana Dumbledore was a half-blood witch and the youngest child and only daughter of Percival and Kendra Dumbledore. She was the younger sister of Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore.
At the age of six, Ariana was attacked by Muggle boys who saw her practising magic, which left her traumatised to the point of rendering her magical abilities uncontrollable. This event had “inspired” Dumbledore and thus joining in partnership with Grindelwald to taking over Muggles’ world “for a greater good”.
It also prompted her father to attack the boys and be imprisoned in Azkaban, while her mother moved the family from Mould-On-The-Wold to Godric’s Hollow and kept Ariana hidden away from the general population. Because of this, the few people who saw Ariana got the impression that she was being imprisoned.
During a fit when she was fourteen years old, Ariana caused a magical explosion that killed her mother. Her older brother Albus then became her guardian. Ariana died when she was accidentally struck by a curse in a three-way duel between her older brothers and Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald. This event would have a profound impact on both her brothers’ lives.
Aberforth Dumbledore was a younger brother of Albus Dumbledore and older brother of Ariana. He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry between 1895 and 1902. His father – who had been sentenced to prison for attacking three Muggles – died in Azkaban when Aberforth was young, and his mother and sister were later accidentally killed. Aberforth blamed his brother Albus for the death of their sister, Ariana and thus their relationship was rather strained.
Aberforth was the owner and barman of the Hog’s Head Inn in Hogsmeade, and was a member of the original Order of the Phoenix during the First Wizarding War. In 1998, he assisted Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger from a distance during their Horcrux hunt.
He subsequently fought in the Battle of Hogwarts and survived the Second Wizarding War. He continued to live in Hogsmeade, tending to his goats.
Honorable Mentions: DEATHLY HALLOWS
Deathly Hallows consisted of 3 magic Hallows:
- the Elder Wand: an immensely powerful wand that was considered unbeatable
- the Resurrection Stone / the Philosopher’s Stone: a stone which could summon the spirits of the dead
- the Cloak of Invisibility: a cloak that renders the user completely invisible
These three highly powerful magical objects supposedly created by Death and given to each of three brothers in the Peverell family. According to the Legend, hundreds of years ago, the three Peverell brothers were travelling at twilight, and reached a river too dangerous to cross. The three brothers, being trained in the magical arts, simply waved their wands and created a bridge across the river. They were then stopped by Death himself, who felt cheated that they had gotten across the river, as most travellers drowned in it.
Death, a cunning liar, then pretended to congratulate them on being clever enough to evade him, and offered each of them a powerful magical item. The first brother, Antioch Peverell, wished to have the most powerful wand out of his combative personality; Death broke a branch off a nearby elder tree and created for him the Elder Wand. The second brother, Cadmus Peverell, out of arrogance, wanted to humiliate Death even further, and wished to have the power to bring loved ones from the grave; Death then took a stone from the riverbed and created for him the Resurrection Stone. The third brother, Ignotus Peverell, who was a humble man, did not trust Death and asked to go on from the river without being followed by Death; Death then gave him his own Cloak of Invisibility, an invisibility cloak that never lost its power through curses or age.
However, Albus Dumbledore felt that it was more likely that the Hallows were actually created by the very talented and powerful brothers, and that the story of their origins as objects fashioned by Death sprang up around them as result of the powers they possessed.
It’s said that he who possesses these three artefacts would become the Master of Death. Dumbledore told Harry that he and another wizard, Gellert Grindelwald, took this to mean that the uniter of the Deathly Hallows would be invincible.
